![]() ![]() Formally, it is a master-servant relationship, as Sam reminds us by constantly referring to Frodo as his “Master” until the very end of the story. The relationship between Frodo and Sam has always been the object of much discussion. ![]() Aristotle’s analysis, however, concentrated on more intimate forms of friendship, and it is definitely the most important description of this phenomenon, because all the following philosophers derived their accounts of friendship from this one, and that is the reason why it was chosen as the basis of the following analysis. In his book, the philosopher used the Greek term Philia, usually translated as friendship for various kinds of relationships, just as was common for his contemporaries. Is it an example of an ideal one and can it function as a role-model of friendship?Īristotle’s description of friendship as provided in books VIII and IX of his Nicomachean Ethics was the first recorded attempt to discuss friendship philosophically, being written down at about 340 B.C. I will examine its development and the nature of their friendship, in an attempt to find out whether it can be regarded as friendship according to Aristotle’s philosophical account, and if yes, what kind of friendship it is. I will concentrate on the relationship of Frodo and Sam, which is the most central to the whole story, since Frodo is the Ring-bearer. ![]() Therefore, in this thesis I would like to introduce a new insight on the interpretation of The Lord of the Rings that explores friendship as its major underlying motif. Even though many readers do notice the importance of this kind of relationship in The Lord of the Rings, and it was also wonderfully depicted by the Peter Jackson’s movie adaptation, Tolkien scholars just seem to show no interest in it. When I searched for the topic of friendship in Tolkien’s writings, I could not find any authorized academic research. It is as if the mere fact that it involves unreal, supernatural characters such as elves, hobbits or ents make it impossible for people to relate to them and consequently study their behavior towards each other in strictly human terms. And if they ever happen to be discussed, it is only to detect the resemblances with the author’s life (like in the case of Aragorn and Arwen’s love story representing that of Tolkien and his wife Edith). However, being a fantasy book and moreover, a prototype of fantasy, the relationships in The Lord of the Rings are hardly ever seriously analyzed. Apparently the power of friendship is what has made the book so appealing to generations of readers for the last sixty years. Towards the end, it turns out that friendship is essential for the completion of the task. Though total strangers at first, in their struggles they soon become more intimate, and always act to save their fellows – their friends. When the fellowship is later formed, the new characters that are chosen to be its members are also supposed to be bound together by friendship to avoid possible betrayal. And as the story evolves, it is again the very same feeling that disallows them to leave him. It is their mutual love that makes them go. Even the subtitle of the first volume, The Fellowship of the Ring, suggests it.Īt the beginning of the quest, the younger hobbits decide to follow Frodo, not because of any family duty or curiosity and desire for adventures. Not magical devices, nor fantastical creatures, nor the perpetual battle between good and evil, but friendship lies at its core. But when I read The Lord of the Rings, I got a feeling that more than anything else it is a story of friendship. The novel, with its quantum of characters, generates a complicated web of various relationships – from enmity, through purely political affectionless war alliances, to romantic love. ![]() In my opinion, the one which in applicability comes closest to real life is the interpersonal level. And in its analysis it can be approached in as many ways. Tolkien, is a powerful story consisting of multiple layers, so every reader can find in it something to his liking. Author’s Note: In the text I use the following abbreviations: ![]() ![]() There is no strict rule for what horse breed should and should not be used for the different sub-categories. Both the English and Western horse riding styles include several subgroups that cover many activities and usually use various horse breeds. Also, in the English category, the bridles and bits used have more direct contact with the horse’s mouth than many Western-style bits.Įnglish riding style originated in Europe, and Western riding and the tack developed on cattle ranches in early America. I was aware of some but decided to research to learn more about riding English style.Įnglish saddles are made to be small and flat this style gives the rider closer contact with the horse. He wanted to know if they’re used for other events besides racing. He noticed the differences between his western saddle and the saddle the jockey rode. I began thinking about English riding events after my grandson became curious about it when we were at the racetrack. That way, you’ll recognize which horse breeds fit best for each discipline and have a solid understanding of the sub-category of horse riding styles. Specific characteristics of each horse breed determine how the horse functions within a person’s favorite horse riding style like:īelow we’ll break down the different sub-categories that fall under the Western and English disciplines, and then we’ll cover some group riding events as well. Horse breed traits determine the riding style it’s best suited. For example, one may rely primarily on leg cues and another on reining to communicate with their horse. Some horse riding events require special equipment and use training techniques unique to their activity. Additionally, there are several sub-categories of riding types that fall under each of these primary disciplines. The origins of each class, the saddles used, and the horse and rider’s positioning distinguish these styles from each other. Some of the most popular horse riding events, like dressage and gymkhana, fall under the two primary horse riding styles: English and Western. That way, you’ll have an excellent understanding of the different types of horse riding so you can choose what equine activity interests you the most and you can adequately prepare. Below we’ll discuss the three meaningful horseback riding styles and the sub-categories of riding that fall within each. Since there isn’t much information available on the Internet today covering the different riding styles, we created this guide to help you. ![]() ![]() ![]() I’m going to divide this talk into three parts. In today’s lecture I’m going to cover three points. What I’m going to be talking about today is…Įxplaining the lecture structure (sections / subtopics):.Today I’ll be talking about / discussing. This morning we are going to take a look at….Remember there are lots of different ways to say these things, so what you hear could be phrased slightly differently. The table includes the signposting language to signal the end of the talk. This list sets out some of the key language that guides you on the overall topic and content of the lecture, and when different sections of the lecture are being discussed. The signposting language we'll look at in this lesson is the words and phrases that introduce the topics and subsections of the lecture. Knowing then the lecture structure and the language the speaker uses to tell you they are moving onto the second section will help you to follow where you are. It may be the case that these two sections follow the sections that the speaker divides their talk into i.e. This is particuarly important if your listening skills are weaker than they should be because you will easily get lost if you don't know where you are.Īlso, the lecture may be split into two parts (see for example the section 4 of this lecture). So it is possible that signposting will be used within this. It is usually a lecture by a professor, a presentation by a student, or a talk by a university staff member. In section 4 of the listening you have to listen to a talk in an academic setting, such as a university. So in other words, it acts as a guide so the listener can follow what you are saying. It is used to make clear what has just happened, and what is going to happen next.
